Meet Mall Kiil
Mall Kiil, Board Certified Music Therapist and founder/principal of STUDIO FOR MUSIC THERAPY has been a special needs music teacher and a music therapist in New Jersey for over 30 years. Mall holds a masters degree in music therapy from NYU and continues her study of the profession by taking advanced training for Analytic Music Therapy certification in NYC. She is also a Certified Child Life Specialist with specialized training for supporting and advocating for children and their families in hospital settings.
Mall’s passion for her work as a music therapist began over 20 years ago at the Forum School in Northern New Jersey. The population of this school ranged from ages 4-16, and most were on the autism spectrum. It was there that Mall saw how powerful music could be in the children’s emotional, cognitive and physical development — and how even the most withdrawn, non-verbal children would draw closer through the invitation of the music.
Other music therapy work experience has included NICU and pediatric floors at Beth Israel Hospital in NYC; work with elderly populations at the the Jewish Home and SPOP, both of which are day centers for adults with medical and/or emotional challenges and with alzheimer’s disease; and a year-long internship working with autistic individuals and groups of at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Center at NYU.
In addition to her music therapy work through the studio, Mall is music director at her local church where she is pianist and choir director and enjoys choral singing as a member of an Estonian ethnic choir.
Mall feels privileged to be working as a music therapist — allowing the magic of music to “open hearts and minds”; allowing the power of music to help clients achieve their potentials.
